Implementation year: 2017-2018
School Without Homework
Opinions about school assignment varied between supporters and opponents, but recent studies have shown that homework is useless and does not lead to the student’s scientific progress or guarantee that he assimilates the material as scheduled, and that daily home exercises are exhausting for the student and his family and even negatively affect the student’s relationship with his family. Al-Furat Schools study the issue and it has been on the table for some time, and after consultations with the administrative and educational body, we decided the initial experience of the project based on the following plan:
Project Goals
1- Make home assignments rare, standardized, prepared, and focus on practical projects and research.
2- Elimination of private lessons that exhausted the family financially, and made the child’s day completely devoted to study, as he starts his school day at school in the morning and ends in the evening before he sleeps with the private teacher, which prevents him from listening in his childhood and to grow healthy and discover the world around him and develop his life skills. His parents had time to guide him, contain him, and broaden his awareness.
3- Improving family relations between the student and her parents, as the daily duties are a subject of tension and attraction between parents and the child, when he constantly avoids them and wants to spend his time playing, discovering and enjoying his childhood while the parents want to finish solving the duties before any other work.
4- Encouraging the student to school and motivating him to perform his school duties during the session and focus more with his teacher, as study and achievement have become his responsibility and not the responsibility of the parents or the private teacher.
5- Discovering the students’ weaknesses early, as we will rely on a new teaching mechanism and daily and weekly measurement, which makes the teacher constantly aware of the student’s level, and how he and the supervisor adopt a treatment plan for him.
Steps taken before project approval :
1- A study of the project, successive meetings between the administrative and educational body, questionnaires, and then meetings with parents to take their opinions about the project .
2- It was decided to implement the project as a trial in the third quarter of the 2016-2017 academic year.
3-Some classes were taken as experimental groups, and other classes were control groups with the availability of the required conditions so that the sample and control classes were in the same stage, grade and type of study (national – international).
4- There was a periodic meeting between the teachers, supervisors and the school director to review the results of the application.
5- After the end of the trial period, a questionnaire was sent to the parents and then a meeting with the mothers to discuss their opinions and proposals.
6- It was decided to implement the project starting from the academic year 2017-2018
Implementation mechanism
1-Replacing the school assignment with the standardized external reading by the teacher, whereby the student is provided weekly, according to his performance in the subject, with interesting stories to read in the subjects (Arabic and English) with a simple measurement sheet.
2- Providing students with links to free and useful sites that contain extensive training for the subject while making the matter optional.
3- Assigning the student to creative projects that interest him, while not counting this in the grades of the subject, but rather making it optional for the voluntary acquisition of knowledge and self-learning.
3- Each student is assigned a weekly evaluation record for all subjects.
4-Parents review the weekly evaluation of the student’s level in all academic subjects, accompanied by evidence.
5- Assigning daily or weekly reinforcement classes to the failed student based on his / her weekly results, and after conducting a measurement test to determine the skills the student failed in..
6- Regular meeting with mothers to discuss their views on the impact of the project on the level of the student and their home life
